CHILD ADVOCATE Shelly Ross is organising a petition to send to Prime Minister Freundel Stuart calling for immediate action against the use
Ross told the SUNDAY SUN that she was hoping to collect 5 000 signatures before hand-delivering the petition to the Prime Minister by the end of May. So far she has 1 000.
“I think it’s time that we look at what is going on in schools seriously and I think one of the only ways to let the authorities know is to take some facts to them and make some changes in Barbados,” she said. “So I have been petitioning to Barbadians and I have a number of signatures already.”
The petition, she added, will urge the Government to investigate what is going on in schools in Barbados and to introduce legislation that would prohibit corporal punishment and bullying, emotional abuse and abuse of power by school staff.
She wants an “independent body” to be set up to carry out the investigation. (MB)
