TODAY MARKS THIRTY ONE YEARS since the death of Barbados’ second Prime Minister, Tom Adams.

Adams, who served as Prime Minister of the island for nine years before his untimely death in 1985, was remembered by most gathered at the St Michael’s Cathedral to lay wreaths at his graveside.

Adams’ successor, Cynthia Forde, remembered him as a formidable man and was on hand to highlight some of his contributions over the years.

“The late Tom Adams would have been my member of parliament when he was alive. We became fond of him due to the tactics he used in the political arena, not only to gain their attention but also to win them over. He was a very charismatic man, brilliant and extremely warm and accommodating when it came to people. Of course we know of his sharp tongue and his retort when it came to matters political.

“Tom was a wonderful and loving man who loved the country very much. He often said when you listen to people you should be able to pick sense from nonsense. He socialised with the people, and often came to my house and sat on the step. That’s the type of man he was,” she added.

Wreaths were also placed on the tomb of Adams’ parents Sir Grantley Adams and his mother Grace, Lady Adams. (RA)
