Crop gets going

REAPING of the much debated 2016 sugar cane crop has started, evidenced by mechanical harvesters operating in a number of cane fields across the island yesterday.

The activity started with the cutting and transportation of cane at Constant, St George, on Monday and heightened yesterday at the weigh station at Carrington, St Philip.

This year’s harvest has suffered a major blow from the drought conditions and is predicted to see a decline in yield.

Chairman of the Barbados Sugar Industry Limited, Patrick Bethell, was quoted in January as saying that the drought conditions actually began in 2014 and caused fewer plants to germinate.
