Flying fish prices take flight

Fisherfolk and customers across the island are crying out against the high prices they now have to pay for one of the ingredients of this island’s national dish.

Flying fish is now scarce in the waters surrounding Barbados, and as a result, customers wanting to delight their palates with the local delicacy now have to pay in some cases, in excess of $25 for a package of ten.

A visit to some fish markets across the island revealed the same situation across the board: small numbers of flying fish, resulting in fish vendors having to pay a higher price for them, which in turn is passed on to the customer.

At Oistins, Christ Church, the fish market was abuzz with activity as vendors hustled in an effort to draw in customers to purchase their offerings.
