The Barbados Fire Service is advising residents who live downwind of the fire at B’s Recycling Plant in Cane Garden, St Thomas, to take every precaution, including leave their homes.
The plume from the fire can be seen in the distance, but those closer in West Terrace, St James; Arthur Seat, St Thomas and Holders Hill, St James, for example, are asked to avoid breathing in the smoke.
Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard told the media it was mainly plastics which were burning. He said they hoped to have it under control by midnight, provided they got the topsoil and trucks to help battle the fire.
Maynard said they were waiting on topsoil from the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre to put out the fire.
In the meantime, the 20-member team from the Barbados Fire Service has confined the blaze to one cell. They received the call around 4:32 p.m. and work was brought to a halt soon after. This outlet closes at 5 p.m.
More than 150 people work at the facility and they were told to leave immediately, the press was told. No injuries have been reported.
Members of the Bynoe family, who operate the business, were on the scene watching the firemen.
Minister of the Environment, Trevor Prescod, and press secretary Roy Morris, were among those at the scene.
