AFRICAN Awareness Day was celebrated in a grand way at Bay Primary School yesterday.
The children, dressed in African garb, chanted loudly as they paraded through the surrounding streets in the Bayland, St Michael area.
Accompanied by a tuk band, the students trailed behind Mother Sally who taught them one or two dance moves. The stiltwalker, green monkey and shaggy bear were too much for some of the tiny tots, who seemed to get emotional at the sight of the darting monkey.
Coordinator of the event and senior teacher, Jennifer Sealy, said the parade served not only as a “walk-through”, but to educate, empower and entertain.
“We need to understand who we are as a people. Today is an educational tool, it is not just African Awareness Day – and our children need to understand the importance of family trees,” she said.
The children, she explained, were instructed to research three generations of their immediate ancestors to teach them the importance of family ties and history. (MR)
