THE SHOCK of Tonya Leacock discovering her grandmother sprawled in the road is an experience she’s not likely to ever forget.
She had been caught in slow moving traffic along The Pine and St Barnabas stretch of the ABC Highway and wondered what was causing it. She soon came upon her grandmother, 72-year-old Ione Dorothy Gilkes, who had been struck by a car moments earlier.
“I know my grandmother, I know her head and when I was getting close, I saw the person and I knew it was her. I open the door and was about to jump out but my boyfriend had to hold me back and tell me to wait until he parked the car,” Tonya recounted.
She said she quickly called her father Leroy “Anthony” Gilkes, and other family members. After that, she said, “I just went cold, cold, cold. I had to walk away from the scene and then come back.” (LK)
