BARBADIANS along the West and North Coasts stopped and stared yesterday at a most unusual sight – a black substance floating on the water.
Kenderson Corbin, who was at Half Moon Fort, said he saw the “flaky” looking film floating across from the Hangman’s Bay side heading north.
“At first I thought it was the seaweed. A guy said it was real thick out Hangman’s Bay. It spread out around five feet from off the shore and the current took it up. We thought it was coming from the ship [docked at the cement plant jetty] but it was coming from the other direction,” he said.
Other eyewitnesses said it had an oily smell. Fisherman Othneil “The Saint” Scantlebury received an unpleasant surprise when he was returning to shore.
