Tree-mendous Christmas fear

HAYNESVILLE, ST JAMES residents got a scare during the wee hours of Christmas Day.

In a terrific crash an old and huge mahogany tree destroyed the handrails of a bridge and blocked the entire pathway of pedestrians. No one was injured during the incident but the rumbling as the tree fell caused mild panic for those readying themselves for the early Christmas morning service.

Resident Curtis Watson said the uprooting took place about 3 a.m. and the obstructed footpath forced walkers to resort to the old trail. The bridge had been there for about eight years.

Watson estimated the tree could be about 100 years and said that passers-by often remarked that it looked as though it was tipping over, but no one paid that much attention.

Yesterday some residents when they came upon the huge tree in their path opted to climb over rather than take the long way round. (AC)
