ISSUES SURROUNDING the controversial tipping fee have reared their head again as some private waste haulers are being accused of illegal dumping to circumvent the fee.
Chairman of the Waste Haulers Association and managing director of Simpson Trucking & Skip Services, Charles Read, expressed concern over the recent discovery of an illegal dumping ground in Butts, St Thomas.
Earlier this year, several private waste haulers banded together to form an association after the tipping fee was imposed. This $25 imposition was introduced by Government on behalf of the privately-owned Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre to dispose of waste at its recycling centre.
“Illegal dumping is a real hot topic right now. In Barbados, we have suffered from indiscriminate dumping for years. Now with the tipping fee, people don’t want to drive up and get the ticket,” he said.
