DON’T EXPECT the principal of Queen’s College to back the reintroduction of single-sex schools in Barbados to stop the slide in poor male academic performance, at least for now.
Dr David Browne said he was of the strong view that the performance of males had nothing to do with co-education.
He put forward his view on the controversial issue while delivering the principal’s report during the school’s annual speech day and prize-giving ceremony yesterday.
“I would like to see a wider study of single-sex classes in secondary schools in Barbados before any major decision is made in relation to a return to any single-sex schools in the island,” he said.
“We know there are some people who believe that co-education is the worst thing that has ever happened in Barbados. I don’t quite agree and I don’t believe that if we go back to single-sex classes on a wide scale, that would necessarily turn around the performance of males.” (WILLCOMM)
