THE HOCKEY ASTROTURF’s lengthy hold up in the Port was an unfortunate situation.
Apparently it was an avoidable one too.
Minister of Sports Stephen Lashley has advised sporting bodies to apply for duty waivers before actually importing equipment, so as to avoid the near three-month delay that local hockey faced with getting its AstroTurf out of the Port.
Lashley made the plea while speaking as a guest on Wednesday’s Talk Yah Talk call-in programme on QFM and addressing a caller’s concerns about duties on sports gear.
“What we have found is that persons go ahead and secure the importation of equipment and then seek to get the duty waiver, and of course there is a delay period that ensues, but the process requires that you seek the waiver before you import the item because suppose the waiver is not granted,” Lashley said.
