As Barbados headed towards its 49th Independence anniversary, one of the island’s elder statesmen of our only indigenous sport showed his patriotism yesterday

At the age of 64, road tennis legend Deighton “Pa” Roach donned the national colours and proved to be a handful on the courts in the inaugural Barbarees Gardens Masters tournament.

With more than 50 players vying for honours, Roach signalled his intentions by blanking Jim “The Nut Man” Haynes 21-15, 21-17.
