Five groups in dance-off

COMMUNITY DANCE FEST continues to be a popular choice of young dancers across the island and with a number of attractive prizes at stake, each group was eager to outdo the others during the preliminaries.

The tenth edition, organised by the Community Development Department through the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, kicked off recently at the Christ Church Foundation School with five dance groups: Dancing Recalcitrant SeraphsWreckage DancersInside OutLivy & Betty Alleyne Dance Centre and Phoenix Dancers vying for a place in the semi-finals.

Most groups utilised music from local artistes as one of the special prizes is for Best Use Of Barbadian Music.

Two groups – Phoenix Dancers and Wreckage Dancers – did a choreography with a message to eradicate violence against women, which is one of the categories for a special prize. This year, all competitors in the finals are eligible for big prizes.

In the adults category (13 and over) prizes include The Minister’s Award, the Esmee Wickham Award and the Joyce Stuart Award.

In the children’s category (ages six to 12) prizes include a top prize of $2 500 and a trophy, a second prize of $1 500 and a third-place prize of $1 000.  The zone finals are scheduled to be held next month and the grand finals will take place on Errol Barrow Day, January 21, at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
