THE HIGH COST OF DUTIES is keeping electric vehicles out of the reach of the average Barbadian car buyer.
Simon Richards, chief executive officer of Megapower Limited, told the DAILY NATION that a brand new electric vehicle could start at about $92 000 and go up to $107 000, and it depended on the specifications and the size of the battery.
“The cars attract about $30 000 in duties each when they come in and it is about 50 per cent more than the average gasoline car. This is the only country in the world that charges more for electric cars in dollars and cents than gasoline cars,” said Richards.
Megapower is the company that imports most of the electric vehicles into Barbados and they were part of the Gear Up For Ev-Lution 2015 Expo at Bushy Park on Sunday. (PG)
