Power boost

BARBADIANS MAY PAY LESS for their electricity bills come August next year.

That’s because the Barbados Light & Power Company (BL&P) is preparing to build a $40 million, 42-acre solar photovoltaic utility plant in Trents, St Lucy, which is expected to generate energy for the national grid and thus reduce costs.

After a media tour of the site yesterday, the company’s manager for system planning and performance, Johann Greaves, explained: “Our fuel savings will be in the region of $11 million annually . . . [and] whatever we save in fuel is actually passed on to customers [as] the fuel clause adjustment is designed . . . that if we [use] less fuel, you can recover more costs.”

However, Greaves said this was also dependent of the price of fuel on the world market and so he cautioned that savings might not be immediately seen when the plant was up and running. (CA)
