ON MONDAY NIGHT at Frank Collymore Hall, the dance acts put on a display of the good, the bad and the ugly during the NIFCA Scotiabank Performing Arts Dance Finals.
The two-and-a-half hour production also had some music finalists so let us get them out the way first. The National Cultural Foundation seems to have decided to mix up the different genres this year, a baffling move as the night was billed dance but had in four music acts. But maybe the acts were a godsend as they got the music judges’ undivided attention.
Kaysha Springer and Jessica Hunte have incredible voices. Springer did One Moment In Time and My Country To Me, while Hunte’s Negro spiritual Bottom Of The River raised the hairs on the back of one’s neck. Kudos to the boys of the Coleridge and Parry School Choir who were her backing band and vocals. Joshua Holder on violin was phenomenal with Dangerous and When I Was Your Man.
As for the dance finals, they can be broken down into the good, the bad and the ugly. (NS)
