PARLIAMENTARIANS are being urged to mark their “X” against vote-buying in local elections.
As the House of Assembly turns its attention to debating the Representation of the People Amendment Bill today, three noted national figures – businessmen Andrew Bynoe and Andy Armstrong, and trade trade unionist/educator Patrick Frost – are urging them to send a strong message against the practice that allegedly raised its head in the last two general elections.
In a statement yesterday anticipating where emphasis would be placed on the discussion by the Lower House on the debate following the summer recess, Bynoe, Armstrong and Frost urged “the legislature to use the opportunity to take a strong position against vote-buying”.
The trio concluded that vote-buying threatened “the moral authority and corrupts the legitimacy of our democratic way of life”.
