Barbados has a new female chess champion.

Harrison College student Gabriela Cumberbatch was crowned champion after narrowly winning the national women’s championship recently at the Barbados Chess Centre in Cavans Lane, the City.

Both Cumberbatch, a member of the Barbados team that competed at the Trinidad Chess Carnival and the CAC Youth Chess Festival in Trinidad last month, and women’s candidate master Katrina Blackman finished with six points from seven games but Cumberbatch was declared champion on account of winning the head-to-head clash.

It all came down to an exciting last round with three players on five points – Cumberbatch, Blackman and Donna Murray.
