HAYDN LEWIS gave it his all but it was not good enough as he lost in three sets to Ecuador’s Emilio Gomez in their Davis Cup Americas Zone Group I match yesterday at the National Tennis Centre.
Lewis lost 1-6, 6-7 (1), 4-6 and now the tie is locked 1-1 heading into today’s doubles match.
Gomez is the son of Andres Gomez, winner of the 1990 French Open, and he showed his pedigree with a convincing 1-6 win in the first set. Lewis’ trademark strong serve was noticeably absent in this set as the Ecuadorean was the one who ended up taking control early on.
“I started a little bit slow in the beginning, to be honest – a little bit wary, I guess, because it was my first match at this level . . . for a while because of my back. So it was a little bit on my mind I was wondering if it would last the match, so it had me a little bit thrown off,” said Lewis.
