Bid to get more farmers insured

Disaster relief is still a major challenge for the farming community, says the chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul.

Speaking at a disaster preparedness press conference at the BAS’ Grotto, St Michael headquarters, Paul told the media that for the past several years farmers, especially those who rear livestock, have been experiencing challenges sourcing disaster relief plans.

“We really want to sit down and discuss with insurance companies how we can make the sector insurable,” he said. “Right now it isn’t, because they (insurance companies) are saying the type of housing provided for livestock is not insurance worthy and are not built to withstand strong winds.

“Some farmers have no problem getting insurance but the small-scale farmers are the ones experiencing the problems.

“So we are trying to identify different insurance companies that would be willing to work with us and we would help farmers be more compliant with the requests of the insurance companies.” (SB)
