MORE THAN 40 COSTUME BANDS and tens of thousands of revellers took to Eastern Parkway in New York yesterday to celebrate the 48th annual West Indian American Day carnival on Labour Day.
The flags of every Caribbean nation fluttered in the breeze along the parade route, and booths were set up all along the way where thousands of Barbadians went to taste their favourite Bajan delicacies.
These included pudding and souse, fish cakes, rice and peas, baked chicken, breadfruit and corn meal cou cou, Banks beer, ginger beer mauby, sugar cane and coconut water.
Despite the hot and humid weather, it was mass enjoyment and gaiety as calypso music and costumes, ranging from human size to those 15 feet tall, were prominent on the streets. Party Monarch Peter Ram’s 2015 soca hit All Ah We was one of the songs “mashing up” the Parkway. (CJ/TB)
