IN A RECENT article I was quoted as having said that going the route of a republic is not enough reason for Barbados to embark on constitutional reform.
What I did say was that if the only reason for changing the Constitution was to substitute a president for a governor general that would not be enough.
In fact I opened my remarks by stating that when many Barbadians speak about constitutional reform they speak as though the only thing that needs to be considered is whether the office of the governor general should be replaced by that of a president.
In paraphrasing my statement, the reporter could have inadvertently given the impression that I consider substituting a president for a governor general, is synonymous with adopting a republican form of Government.
This is not intended to criticise the reporter for an article, which was in the most part accurate, but simply to correct any wrong impression your readers might have had.
