‘The lack of trust’ cause of breakdown

NO CONSENSUS AND COMMUNICATION equals conflict, says former prime minister Owen Arthur.

And that, he contends, is at the core of the industrial unrest in Barbados today.

He said Barbados was mired in a debilitating economic crisis that was imposing incredible strains on the country’s social fabric, and creating new forms of social disharmony.

“The crisis persists because no substantial nor successful effort has been engaged in to build a national consensus as to how the crisis should be resolved. Communication has also broken down [within the Social Partnership].

 “In the absence of consensus and communication in Barbados, where there should be cooperation, there is now increasing conflict,” said the former three-term leader. (SP)
