13 homeless after fire

“I’M TOO OLD to start afresh,” was the anguished cry of 67-year-old Carlita Carty as she watched fire destroy one house and start on hers.

Carty’s uninsured houses were extensively damaged while the next door three-bedroom house shared by her two daughters was destroyed, leaving 13 people homeless and three houses affected at Jordan Land, Deacons, St Michael.

The fire started about 12:35 p.m. carlita-carty

Carty, a hypertensive senior, said she bought her home 23 years ago and she recently repaired the other house, with the intention of offering it for rent.

“I just repair it . . . the whole thing new. I don’t have a cent to go repair house again,” said an emotional Carty, who lived alone and managed to save only a few items. (LK)
