Inniss weighs in on proposed national shutdown

MINISTER OF COMMERCE Donville Inniss is stepping in to try to avert a national shutdown this week as threatened by the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), with the backing of the Barbados Workers Union (BWU).

Inniss told the SUNDAY SUN yesterday he would be dispatching a letter to the union  early tomorrow morning inviting its officials to meet with him and the top brass of the Barbados Investment & Development Corporation (BIDC) which “retired” ten employees just over a week ago, precipitating the dispute.

But he warned that the invitation to meet should not be taken to mean that the BIDC had changed its position on the matter.

“As Minister of Commerce, I am prepared to facilitate a meeting between the BIDC and the NUPW to discuss matters related to the recent retirement of ten members of the BIDC staff… (RRM)
