APPARENTLY BARBADOS just can’t avoid heartache.

Or beat the United States Virgin Islands (USVI).

Barbados’ long-time rivals stuck it to them again, and in excruciating fashion too, having survived a furious fourth-quarter rally before knocking the ultramarine and gold right out of medal contention via Thursday’s cruel 78-71 nail-biter at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Championships.

It marked yet another painful end to the latest unsuccessful run to the semis for the Bajans, who similarly missed out on last year’s final four by falling agonisingly short in an 81-77 thriller versus hosts BVI after rallying from down 20 points.

The defeat was also the third in a row against a USVI squad that hasn’t lost to Barbados at this level since their 2004 group encounter in Cuba.
