THE SWIRLING FIFA CONTROVERSY in which a number of its executives have been indicted by the United States Department of Justice on corruption charges may be raised at the upcoming CARICOM Heads of Government Conference slated for July 2 to 4 at the Hilton Barbados Resort.
Among the FIFA executives indicted are some from the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) region.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Senator Maxine McClean, responding to a question from the Press as to how CARICOM would deal with the controversial matter, said she could not speak for CARICOM.
“I can’t speak for CARICOM and it’s not a matter that has come up yet . . . . As you said, it is very current and it may be raised by a head, but I can tell you that the first place it would go to is the heads, as this is a conference of the heads . . . I can’t anticipate.”
CARICOM heads will be attending the 36th staging of the conference which will also be attended by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. (JS)
