SELECT SECONDARY SCHOOL students will be getting a taste of campus life this summer.
As part of a new University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill programme, 250 students, aged 15 – 17, will attend classes and even sleep over at the institution.
Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Dr Jennifer Obidah, revealed the programme today at the 2015 biennial conference of the UWI Schools of Education, under the theme Transforming Education: New Frameworks and Alliances.
“For the first time we are going to offer UWI 101, where, from July 20 – 25, the faculty of Humanities and Education, in collaboration with the other faculties, will be acquainting 250 secondary school students to the university,” she said.
Obidah said the students would take part in lectures and discussions, projects, activities and a stay overnight as well as interact with staff. In addition, Obidah said 75 of those chosen would be doing so free of charge.
“I am also very pleased to announce that, through funds from the CIBC FirstCaribbean bank, we are offering 75 of those youngsters’ scholarships to this programme. The only thing they will have to do is get a letter from their principals or teachers nominating them for the programme,” she said.
The three day conference took place at the Accra Beach Hotel. It also featured guest speaker, parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Education, Senator Harry Husbands and a keynote address from United States based Professor Frank C. Worrell. (CA)
