Progress in Customs impasse

GOVERNMENT AND trade union leaders today reported progress towards ending controversy over the planned transfer of Customs & Excise Department workers to a new agency – the Barbados Revenue Authority.

Both Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler, who chaired a meeting with unionists and Customs employees at Government Headquarters, and Barbados Workers Union delegation leader Sir Roy Trotman told reporters the three-hour meeting had gone some way towards addressing problems.

Local trade unions have charged that Government seems bent on reducing the number of Customs & Excise Department workers through their transfer from the Ministry of Finance to the Barbados Revenue Authority, and also at varying the conditions of their employment. (TY)
