Bajan jockey wins top award

BARBADIAN jockey Quincy Welch has landed the biggest award of his riding career.

The 35-year-old, who immigrated to Canada in 1997, will be the recipient of the 2015 Alvelino Gomez Memorial Award on June 14 – Woodbine Oaks Day.

Welch will receive a replica which is presented to the honoree annually on this day to commemorate the contribution the Cuban-born Gomez made. Gomez died as a result of complications after a three horse accident  in the Canadian Oaks back in 1980.
