Nick Blackman’s wonder strike proved to be enough as Barbados Tridents clawed their way to a 1-0 victory over United States Virgin Islands Dashing Eagles in their Concacaf Nations League encounter on Saturday night at the Wildey Turf.

Blackman’s left footed free kick from 30 yards out sailed beat the wall for pace before embarrassing USVI stopper Lionel Brown and settling in the back of the net.

Besides a close call in the first half, the visitors barely threatened a make-shift centre back pairing of Mario Williams and Akeem Hill.

The 22 year-old Hill joined an illustrious group to captain Barbados in a competitive fixture.

Head coach Russell Latapy was delighted with the result and the three points which sent Barbados to the top of Group A in League C after St.Martin’s shock 3-0 win over Cayman Islands in Anguilla earlier on Saturday.

“I thought it was a very difficult game. USVI came and sat in and made it very difficult for us to break them down.” Latapy said post-match.

“I thought we controlled the game pretty much from start to finish but we need to execute a little better and be a bit more clinical with the chances we create so we can have an easier finish to games.”
