Oil drill brings new platform for Barbados

THE RECENT AGREEMENT between the Freundel Stuart administration and BHP Billiton Pretroleum for oil exploration off the island has been described as “a platform to explore the frontiers of a new form of development in Barbados”.

This is the assessment of Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler given during a cocktail reception at the Barbados Hilton, Wednesday evening to celebrate the signing which took place earlier in the day between Prime Minister Stuart and Dr Niall McCormack vice president exploration of Billiton.

The event attended by a phalanx of Cabinet members, senior private and public sector personnel and representatives from Billiton, including McCormack, heard Sinckler praise the initiative as an “historic event”.

He said given the substantial nature of the project and the technical detail involved, it was critical that Government took its time to ensure that there was “a solid platform from which we can spring into a bright and successful future for all concerned”. (JS)
