ROLAND BUTCHER has hung up his hat as head coach of the Sports Academy at the University of the West Indies (UWI), but he is not out of the crease by a long shot.

The former first-class cricketer who played three Tests for England in 1981 began his tenure as head of the Cave Hill Campus’ sports programme along with Steven Leslie in 2004, after he was asked to do so by Sir Hilary Beckles.

He was also instrumental in leading the UWI into first division cricket and fielding the first team led by captain Shirley Clarke, after tackling the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) – a feat he said took two years to accomplish.

Following along in that vein, proposals were sent to the West Indies Cricket Board to allow a Combined Campuses and Colleges team to take part in regional competitions. (RA)
