CAL said effective January 10, next year, the airline will discontinue services on its Tortola, British Virgin islands (BVI) and San Juan, Puerto Rico routes following comprehensive evaluations of route performance and resource deployment.

ICBL earns $10.6m

0

The Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited (ICBL) is reporting a significant increase in profits.

Chairman Joe Poulin, reporting on the nine-month period ended September 30, said that ICBL’s net income was $10.6 million.

He called this outcome “a remarkable 35 per cent improvement compared to the same nine-month period in 2024”.

Poulin’s review accompanied the insurer’s consolidated financial statements for the first three quarters of its 2025 financial year.

“For the period, ICBL recorded insurance revenue of $96.4 million, representing a 6.9 per cent increase over the prior year,” the chairman said.

“Net income amounted to $10.6 million, a remarkable 35 per cent improvement compared to the same nine-month period in 2024. This strong performance resulted in earnings per share of 25 cents, up from 19 cents for the corresponding period last year.”

Poulin said ICBL’s balance sheet “remains robust, with total assets of $346.6 million, and shareholders’ equity stands at $122.9 million, underscoring our solid capital position and our ability to comfortably meet regulatory requirements”.

He reported that the past two years were “marked by significant transition and resilience for the company as we continue to navigate the complexities associated with the adoption of IFRS 17, a new Financial Reporting Standard”.

“ICBL continues to maintain a strong financial foundation, supported by prudent risk management practices and disciplined operational execution. Our capital adequacy remains well above regulatory thresholds, ensuring that we are well-positioned to meet our obligations while pursuing sustainable growth,” the chairman said.

“In the interim, and in recognition of the company’s strong performance in financial year 2024 and to date at quarter three 2025, our healthy capital position, the board of directors has approved an interim dividend of ten cents per share.

“This decision reflects our continued commitment to delivering value to our shareholders.”

Poulin said that ICBL’s employees, policyholders and shareholders, remained “focused on strengthening our business and creating long-term value in Barbados”.

Serena Williams denies tennis return

0

Serena Williams has filed the necessary paperwork for a return to tennis – but then said she is “not coming back” to the sport.

The American great, who won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, retired after the 2022 US Open.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency has confirmed to BBC Sport that Williams, 44, is back on the list of players registered for the drug testing pool.

Her name also appears on the most recent document published by the organisation on October 6.

Just hours after it emerged she had re-entered the sport’s registered drug testing pool, Williams posted on social media: “I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy”.

Why Williams would ask for her name to be added, without any intention of playing again, remains a mystery because joining the list invites a visit from doping officials.

Every active player is subject to out-of-competition testing. But those in the testing pool – which is largely comprised of the top 100 singles, doubles and wheelchair players as well as returning athletes – must let the testers know where they will be for one hour of every single day.

Williams was never a fan of the word retirement, preferring instead to say she was “evolving away” from the sport in 2022.

Bill Clinton, Billie Jean King, Tiger Woods and Mike Tyson were among the crowd in New York three years ago as Williams won her first two singles matches at her final US Open.

Her career was eventually brought to an end by Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round, but only after Williams had saved five match points in an electric night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Every retired player must make themselves available for out-of-competition testing for six months before they are eligible to compete professionally again.

It is not known exactly when Williams asked for her name to be re-added to the list, but, even if she had to wait six months from October 6, it would make a return possible from April.

Williams spoke about using weight-loss drugs in August when she appeared on the Today Show on TV in the United States.

She said that, despite “training five hours a day” and “running, walking, biking, stair climbing,” she struggled to lose weight and had to “try something different”.

Only Margaret Court and Novak Djokovic have won more Grand Slam singles titles than Williams.

Her haul of seven Australian Open titles, three French Opens, seven Wimbledons and six US Opens is the most major singles titles by any woman in the Open era.

Serena’s older sister Venus made a comeback after 16 months off the tour earlier this year.

Seven-time major singles champion Venus competed in the singles and doubles at the US Open aged 45, reaching the last eight of the women’s doubles alongside Leylah Fernandez.

Serena and Venus won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals together, and the prospect of a Williams sisters reunion in 2026 remains an enticing one. (BBC)

Search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 to resume

0

The search for the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 will resume on December 30, over a decade after the aircraft with 239 people on board vanished, Malaysian authorities have said.

This fresh search, which will run for 55 days, had begun in March but was suspended shortly after because of poor weather conditions.

“The latest development underscores the [Malaysia’s] commitment to providing closure to the families affected by this tragedy,” the transport ministry said Wednesday, according to local media.

Flight MH370, a Boeing 777, disappeared in 2014 while travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and sparked the largest search in aviation history.

Exploration firm Ocean Infinity is leading the current search under a “no find, no fee” arrangement. It will receive $70m (£56m) if the wreckage is found, Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook earlier said.

Previous attempts include a multinational search involving 60 ships and 50 aircraft from 26 countries, which ended in 2017, and a 2018 effort by Ocean Infinity ended after three months.

Flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic control less than an hour after take-off on March 8, 2014, and radar showed it had deviated from its original flight path.

It remains one of the greatest aviation mysteries, which continues to haunt the families of those on board. Over the years, many had called for a new search, noting their struggle to find closure.

The incident has also given rise to a host of conspiracy theories, including speculation that the pilot had deliberately brought the plane down or that it had been hijacked.

An investigation in 2018 found that the plane’s controls were likely deliberately manipulated to take it off course, but drew no conclusions behind it.

Investigators said at the time that “the answer can only be conclusive if the wreckage is found”. (BBC)

Hope bats through eye infection to topscore for WI

2

Shai Hope batted in sunglasses because of an eye infection, but saw the ball well enough to compile a solid half century against New Zealand on the second day of the first cricket Test on Wednesday (Tuesday night Barbados Time).

While it might have been surprising to many fans to see Hope sporting large reflective glasses under his helmet in gloomy conditions, his first half century against the Black Caps stabilised the West Indies’ first innings after the loss of two early wickets.

It however didn’t save the visitors from disaster as they ended the second day of the first Test trailing by 96 runs. The West Indies were bowled out for 167 in their first innings – 64 runs behind New Zealand who reached 32 without loss in seven overs before stumps.

At the other end Tagenarine Chanderpaul diligently defied the bowling in a half century. He added a 90-run partnership with Hope which helped the West Indies towards parity with New Zealand who made 231 in their first innings.

The accomplishments of Hope and Chanderpaul were magnified by the fact it was a day when the ball consistently beat the bat, when runs had to be grafted. Chanderpaul ended on 52 off 169 balls with three fours, while Hope was a bit more enterprising with a top score of 56 off 107 balls with four boundaries.

Matt Henry bowled with pace and accuracy, applying constant pressure around off stump. He dismissed Alick Athanaze (4), then Roston Chase and Justin Greaves for ‘ducks’ in the same over and finished the day with 3-39.

The West Indies were 157-6 before a late shower forced players from the field. When they returned, the tail had to face the New Zealand pacers in fading light and the last four wickets fell for ten runs. Jacob Duffy captured all four to finish with 5-34 – his first five-wicket haul in his first Test match on home soil.

The match will resume on Thursday morning (Wednesday 6 p.m. Barbados Time).

Barbados, Ghana chambers partner

1

Barbados has taken another significant step towards boosting trade and economic ties with Africa, this time via the business community.

The Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and officials say it affirms the two organisations’ commitment to deepen trade and economic co-operation between the business sector in Barbados and Ghana.

The recent signing ceremony took place at the BCCI headquarters in Braemar Court, Deighton Road, St Michael.

The MOU “establishes a formal framework for co-operation, paving the way for business-to-business (B2B) engagements, market intelligence sharing and joint trade missions between Barbadian and Ghanaian companies”.

It also “seeks to explore opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, fintech, banking, manufacturing, and processing, while promoting the exchange of regulatory and commercial information on both markets”.

For BCCI president Paul Inniss, the partnership is a strategic step toward expanding market access.

“This partnership between our chambers will pave the way for joint business missions and exchange programmes between Barbados and Ghana and, by extension, open channels for Barbadian companies into West Africa and for Ghanaian and African companies into the Caribbean,” he said.

“This is exactly the kind of concrete outcome we see as a framework for sustained collaboration beyond the conference room, so that our businesses continue to engage month after month and partner with our African counterparts.

“We see this as part of a broader strategy of South-to-South cooperation and diaspora-led investment, aligning with the African Union Agenda 2063 for a connected, global Africa,” Inniss added.

Misha Lobban-Clarke, BCCI executive director, also emphasised the significance of this historic milestone.

She said the MOU “represents years of dialogue and determination on both sides”.

“Despite delays at the start, both chambers remained committed because we recognised that there is immense potential in building stronger ties between Barbados and Ghana that can result in tangible outcomes for the benefit of both nations,” Lobban-Clarke noted.

President of the Ghana National Chamber, Stephane Miezan, emphasised the scope of opportunities for mutual benefits.

“From agriculture to mining, fintech, banking, manufacturing, and processing, the opportunities are vast,” Miezan said.

“Ghana is a bigger country in comparison to Barbados, which means the potential benefits we can bring to Barbados are enormous. We are committed to ensuring that this partnership be sustainable and impactful.”

Barbados High Commissioner to Ghana, Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, commended both chambers for the important milestone, giving the assurance that “Barbados believes strongly in our social partnership model for national development, and we have embraced this in our work in Kenya and Ghana”.

“Engaging the private sector through Chambers of Commerce provides a strong platform for businesses seeking to access new markets,” the diplomat said.

Overall, officials involved said the MOU “underscores a shared commitment and vision by both chambers to foster long-term economic co-operation, South-to-South trade, and diaspora-led investments, strengthening ties between Barbados, Ghana, and the wider African region”. (SC/PR)

Full House star Dave Coulier diagnosed with tongue cancer

0

Actor Dave Coulier, who starred in the US TV sitcom Full House, has announced he has been diagnosed with tongue cancer.

It comes seven months after Coulier, 66, told fans he was cancer free, following his 2024 diagnosis of stage three non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer.

Speaking to NBC’s Today show, Coulier said his tongue cancer has “a 90 per cent curability rate”, adding that he is undergoing 35 rounds of radiation that will end on December 31.

Coulier explained his latest diagnosis is “totally unrelated to the previous cancer that I had”.

Coulier is best known for playing Joey Gladstone, or “Uncle Joey”, on Full House, a sitcom which aired on ABC between 1987 and 1995.

It followed a widowed father named Danny who enlists his brother-in-law Jesse and best friend Joey to help him raise his three daughters after his wife’s death.

Coulier appeared in all 192 episodes, and later reprised his role for the 2016 Netflix reboot, titled Fuller House, which went on to run for five seasons.

In November 2024, Coulier announced he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, and he quickly began chemotherapy after discovering it was stage three. Earlier this year, he announced he was cancer free.

But on Tuesday, Coulier told Today: “In October of this year, I went in for a PET scan, just a routine check-up and something flared on the PET scan.”

“It turned out that I have P16 squamous carcinoma at the base of my tongue. So I said to the doctors, ‘Well, did this happen because of the lymphoma?’ And they said, ‘Totally unrelated.'”

P16 carcinoma is also known as oropharyngeal tongue cancer. P16 is a protein that increases in cancer cells when human papillomavirus (HPV) is present.

Coulier said his doctors told him his tongue cancer “could stem from having an HPV virus up to 30 years ago”, adding: “A lot of people carry the HPV virus, but they said mine activated and turned into a carcinoma.”

The actor continued: “Prognosis is very good for P16 squamous carcinoma, it has a 90 per cent curability rate.

“But the thing that has really saved my life is that early detection saved my life, not just the first time but the second time as well.”

“So I hope you’re getting your check-ups. I hope you get your colonoscopies and breast exams and prostate exams, they will save your life.”

Referring to his tongue cancer diagnosis, Coulier explained “the doctor said the prognosis is good, but we’re going to start radiation immediately”.

“It’s a whole different animal than chemo. It doesn’t feel as aggressive, but there are still side effects.” (BBC)
