Similac product recall touches Barbados

Drugmaker Abbott Laboratories is recalling millions of containers of its best-selling Similac infant formula that may be contaminated with insect parts.
The voluntary action affects up to five million Similac-brand powder formulas sold in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and some Caribbean countries, including Barbados. The company says the products may contain a small beetle or larvae, which could cause stomach ache and digestion problems.
A company spokeswoman says Abbott uncovered the insects last week in one section of a manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan.
“We immediately shut down that one area and began an investigation,” says Abbott’s Melissa Brotz.
The recall includes certain Similac powder product lines offered in the large plastic containers. The confirmed lot numbers which were available in Barbados are:
