It was a morning of cake and celebration earlier today for Barbados’ latest centenarian Sylvia Marguerita Norville.
The former Bank Hall, St Michael resident, who now resides at Alicia Senior Citizens’ Home, spent the morning chatting with Governor General Sir Clifford Husbands and was feted by her children – sons Colbert, who turns 80 next month; Rodney; and Mark Norville; along with her daughter Patricia Reid – and other relatives.
Mark recalled that his mother was a faithful church member who attended the All Souls Anglican Church in Bank Hall, but said she now visited the St George Anglican with him on special occasions. On Monday Norville attended a service with her children to give praise for reaching the milestone.
Norville was described by her children and grandchildren alike as a classic comedian, who was still very witty and alert.
When asked what contributed to her longevity, Norville said: “I did not do it by myself – the Lord helped me.” Her son Mark added that she said she was going to 112, a declaration she made some ten years ago. (LK)
