Protecting jobs in the public sector has always been a priority for the Government and will continue to be.
Prime Minister Freundel Stuart says this was always at the centre of Government’s policy.
“We have felt that if Government was so wrong headed to treat employment other than a primary priority, it would send the wrong signal to people in the private sector,” noting any other thinking could have ended in social dislocation had this been done.
Stuart said there was no denying that Barbados was operating in a difficult world situation.
“It is not denied that it is not of Barbados’ making. It is not denied that this is the first time that the Barbados economy has been so affected…” he added.
“We are not a collection of Robinson Crusoes,” he said, noting that whatever goes on in the world, impacts on the local economy.
