THE DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY (DLP) last Friday night officially welcomed scores of new members to its ranks at a special induction ceremony at its George Street, Belleville, St Michael headquarters.
General secretary George Pilgrim said that given the interest in the party and desire by many people to join, the induction was being done in phases.
He said two similar ceremonies were planned for next year, one in April when the party observes its anniversary celebrations.
“The inductees will be given a political orientation starting in January when they will be [introduced to] the principles and philosophy of the party,” Pilgrim added.
Friday’s induction ceremony was part of the week of activities saluting late DLP?leader David Thompson, and inductees were able to view the exhibits highlighting the life and times of Thompson.
The DLP’s general secretary said each of the 250 people accepted into the party Friday night received a certificate signed by him and the political leader Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.
But the night was not just about politics. After Stuart outlined the various organs of the party and what was expected of members of the DLP, there was entertainment and the opportunity for inductees to mix and mingle with the stalwarts in a social setting.
Master of ceremonies was Quincy Jones, a Young Democrat.
