The ballroom buzz at the nationals

The ballroom fraternity wrapped up the year with the final waltz and other dances in a keen competition at the Barbados Dance Council Nationals held at the Ursuline Convent School Hall last Saturday night.
Competitors in the juvenile, junior, youth, masters and adult categories worked their way around the dance floor trying to catch the eyes of the judges in the waltz, tango, quick step, Viennese waltz, foxtrot, paso doble, samba, rhumba, jive and cha cha, and ultimately best all the other couples in the Ballroom and Latin competitions in the process.
There was no stopping Ross Harris and Kara Cutting, who appeared as couple number 18 in both the Ballroom and Latin competitions. They impressed the judges with their execution of the steps and various forms as they moved gracefully across the floor to emerge winners in both.
Also doing the double were Shane Alleyne and Sheryl Forde, who took top prizes in Ballroom and Latin in the junior category.
Masters competitor Rinaldo was in winner’s row twice, with Deana Peters and Sally-Ann Burton-Warner in Ballroom and Latin, respectively.
The most exciting portion was arguably the adult Latin segment, where the three competing couples had the small audience captivated with their gyrating bodies, rolling hips and backsides in five different dances.
At the end of the cha cha, samba, rhumba, paso doble and jive, Glenford Defreitas and his partner Shellyann Alleyne were popular winners. It was a great night for the folks at Livy & Betty Studio, which took three first prizes in the Ballroom category and two in the Latin category.
