Eric “Fly” Sealy was laid to rest today after a church service at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Bay Street, St Michael.
A reasonably sized congregation of family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of the former boxing and show promoter and political activist, who died at the age of 85.
The service entailed poetry from one of his daughters Erica Spizzirri; a personalized rendition of My Way from entertainer and promoter Richard Stoute and a moving eulogy from president of the Barbados Council for the Disabled Joey Harper.
“Many years from now, his contributions will be spoken about in a way they deserve but today we say thanks that we have the chance to talk, listen and share thoughts, but what we are sure of is that Eric Sealy will not be forgotten,” Harper said.
Father Clement Paul preached the sermon and said while Sealy was known as a controversial person, that in itself was not predominantly negative.
“I am sure many positive political decisions were made because they [politicians] knew if they did not, Eric would jump down their throats on the political platform,” he said.
The service moved on to Westbury cemetery for the interment. There, family and friends said their final farewell to the man who touched so many lives, even in death. (CA)
