‘Don’t wait’ on CJ issue

With its strong common law traditions and sound reputation for observing the rule of law, Barbados should move to appoint a Chief Justice as soon as possible.
The suggestion came from Sir Dennis Byron, president-elect of the Caribbean Court of Justice, who told the WEEKEND NATION in New York the matter should be resolved to protect the stability and independence of its courts.
“Barbados always had a strong tradition for the common law,” Sir Dennis noted. “Barbados has had a reputation of recognizing and responding to the principles of the rule of law and I would figure it to be a jurisdiction where one would expect that these principles are constantly observed.
“The court system there has been functioning well, effectively, and even though at the moment there is a problem with delays in the appointment of a chief justice, which may cause some concern, the general reputation of the judiciary in Barbados is sound. (TB)
