Thousands of soccer-crazy fans thronged Kensington Oval last night to see Manchester United dazzling and in living colour to capture the inaugural British Airways Football Legends Invitational Tournament with an impressive 4-1 victory over Chelsea Masters.
Even with Trinidad and Tobago star Dwight Yorke sitting out the finals, United warmed the hearts of their massive base of Barbadian supporters to take charge of the match while shutting out the still dangerous Gianfranco Zola. The crowd, estimated to be more than 7 000, turned out in their colours and jerseys to give vociferous support for the stars.
An added flavour was given to the finals with former West Indies captain Brian Lara, who had played for Liverpool on Friday and last night, suiting up for United. Lara might not have displayed the obvious football prowess of the former FA stars, but his personal magnetism proved still powerful when he was besieged by all and sundry for autographs after the game.
Here, Manchester United players celebrating their capture of the trophy last night, with Lara fourth from right.
