LAUDERHILL, Florida – John Campbell completed a fine all-round performance, stroking his third straight hundred to lead West Indies Under-19s to an eight-wicket victory over the United States Under-19s in the Youth One-day International series yesterday.
Campbell struck eight fours and seven sixes in his even, undefeated 101 from 69 balls, as the Young Windies successfully chased 134 for victory, reaching their target with 190 deliveries remaining in the final match at the Central Broward Regional Park.
The result meant that West Indies swept the four-match series 4-0, after winning the first match last Saturday by 215 runs, the second last Sunday by 268 runs, and the third match on Tuesday by 220 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis Method.
Young USA, choosing to bat first, were dismissed for 133 in 49.3 overs, with Amir Khan taking three for 13 from his allotted ten overs, and Campbell capturing three for 18 from 4.3 overs.
Campbell added 69 for the second wicket with Stephen Etwaroo, and he then put on 52 – unbroken – for the third wicket with Justin Greaves, who finished the match with a straight six.
There were also hundreds for Campbell and Kyle Mayers in the West Indies’ victory on Tuesday.
Campbell hit the top score of 152 and Mayers supported with 107, as West Indies posted a formidable 368 for seven from their allocation of 50 overs in the third match of the series at the Central Broward Regional Park.
Chasing a revised target of 322 from 42 overs, following a lightning storm, the Americans finished on 101 for five.
Campbell struck 13 fours and five sixes from 96 balls, giving West Indies a rousing start, dominating an opening stand of 104 with his captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who fell for 18.
The visitors slipped to 152 for three in the 25th over before Mayers arrived, and put on 110 for the fourth wicket with Campbell.
After Campbell was dismissed, Mayers, whose innings contained
11 fours and two sixes from 87 balls, added another 79 with Kieron Joseph. Prashanth Nair was the most successful American bowler with five for 57.
On Sunday, Campbell, a 17-year-old left-hander, cracked a superb 154 from 134 balls to propel the tourists to 339 for four off their 50 overs.
He blasted nine fours and sixes and was supported by Brathwaite who stroked 53 from 75 balls, and Ramon Senior who carved out a 44-ball 42.
Mayers then captured three for 13 with his medium pace and left-arm spinner Kavem Hodge, two for 14, as the hosts were sent tumbling for 71 off 28.1 overs.
In Saturday’s first match, the Young Windies piled up 278 for eight off their 50 overs with Brathwaite reeling off an unbeaten 122 from 148 balls, with two fours and a six.
Sunil Ambris stroked 67 from 73 balls while Hammad Shahid led the US with three for 58.
The hosts then perished for a woeful 63 with Mayers claiming five for 17. (CMC)
