BWU sends warning to LIAT

WITH NO PROGRESS towards a settlement, the Barbados Workers’ Union is still considering industrial action against LIAT (1974) Limited over closure of the airline’s Bridgetown ticketing office.
BWU general secretary Sir Roy Trotman told reporters yesterday that while LIAT may have had good reason for closing the office, the union was concerned with the way it was done.
On August 3, LIAT closed the office, part of a move eliminating city ticketing offices (CTO) and cutting costs across the region.
A LIAT statement explaining the closure said: “The present business model, which has become the norm in airline distribution, no longer requires CTOs; the company has demonstrated that the continued expenditure on the CTOs was contributing to draining its financial resources to a dangerous extent.”
