A?GROUP?of workers who do not normally share the spotlight came out as the top employees when the Nation Publishing Company Limited held its annual employee appreciation day celebrations yesterday.
Awards were presented in categories ranging from perfect attendance to most improved worker and long tenure during the ceremony held at Nation House, Fontabelle, St Michael.
However, the cream of the awards, the Spirit of St Mary’s Row, went to a group of workers who work behind the scenes, the sub-editorial team.
The criterion for this award is an employee who, in the Publisher’s and the CEO’s assessment, best exemplifies that spirit of unselfish dedication, sacrifice and loyalty to the newspaper that characterized those early days of the Nation’s experience.
This year the award has been presented to the sub-editors because of their outstanding contribution to the production of the newspaper despite the many challenges they may have faced.
The team comprised: Jessica Barrow, David Ashby, John Boyce, Bea Dottin,?Marcia Dottin, Kendy Graham, David Harding, Luigi Marshall, Rhonda Parris, Desery Roach, Sandra Sealey and Natanga Smith.
It was the first time this top award was not won by an individual.
The Al Gilkes Award was won by sports journalist Sherrylyn Toppin.
This award is presented to the journalist whose overall contribution made the greatest impact in the Editorial Department.
Another first was the special honourable mention given to Lyle Jones, head of the Fourth Estate unit in the Advertising Department for his sterling work throughout the year. He was a nominee for the Spirit of St Mary’s Award and went on to win the Key Employee Award.
Executive-in-Charge and Nation director Wilfred Field lauded the winners of the various awards as well as the people who were nominated in the various categories for their contributions to the development of the company over the past year. (ES)
