Duty-Free Day plight

IT’S AN?INITIATIVE that’s meant to boost sales but three prominent retailers are not buying into Duty-Free Day, branding it unfair and discriminating.
One of them, ShopSmart, is agitating for the Fair Trading Commission to investigate Friday’s event, which will allow locals to buy duty free up to $1 000.
Mark Niles, operations manager for ShopSmart, is concerned that only City establishments would benefit from the event which he said created “a most unlevel playing field when one set of businesses is favoured so much over others”.
“This is a matter that, without prompting, the Fair Trading Commission needs to look into. (JS)
