Help less fortunate enjoy Christmas

Dear Readers,
It’s that time of the year when people in need seek assistance.
Over the past several months, and especially during the summer holidays, the demand for food and clothing was overwhelming.
Many individuals reached out to offer assistance, which was much appreciated.
The demand this time of the year is even greater as those in need seek to enjoy a better Christmas during this season of giving.
Food, clothing and furniture are high on the priority list. During the past week, my assistant and I were able to provide furniture of all sorts to families in need across the island.
This was made possible through the response of kind-hearted Barbadians.
Today, I am making a plea on behalf of those who are still in need. These include, but are not limited to, a grandmother whose daughter has died and left two children behind (their father recently lost his job); a family of nine who has difficulty getting a daily hot meal and is badly in need of furniture; a mother whose husband has lost his job and who cannot adequately take care of their two children; a family of three who desperately needs a home and furniture; a family of six whose only means of support is the medical benefit cheque that the grandmother receives; and yet a family of four, who lost their home of many years after not being able to pay the rent – and the list goes on.
The needs never stop. There are many requests for help but, in some cases, help cannot be given when the resources are few.
That there are lots of pockets of poverty in our country is an understatement. One reader, who donated a bed last week and offered to accompany the team to the family in need, later raised questions about the level of poverty in Barbados, especially when he saw the living conditions of this family.
Like many other people, he too was oblivious to the struggles many Barbadians are facing daily.
As the Christmas holiday approaches I urge you to give generously – food items are particularly needed, as well as furniture and appliances in good condition, toys, and children and adult clothing (suitable for church). These must be clean and in good condition.
Whatever contribution you can make, please do so. Help to ensure that those less fortunate than you are can also get to enjoy a great Christmas season.
Items can be dropped off up to December 19 at the Nation’s offices. Thank you for reaching out.
– CHRISTINE
