ATTORNEY GENERAL Adriel Brathwaite should have a report today on how Curtis Callender died in police custody.
Speaking to the Press after delivering an address at the intersessional meeting of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police at Divi Southwinds yesterday, Brathwaite said he had scheduled a meeting with Acting Commissioner of Police Bertie Hinds for yesterday or early this morning.
“I will not speculate as to what will be contained in that report. But what I can guarantee to the public of Barbados is that any matter that I’m involved with, that there will be transparency and full accountability,” he said.
Brathwaite said he would not comment on any need for external investigators until he had seen the report. Callender, 35, of Rollins Road, Brittons Hill, St Michael, died in police custody last Thursday after reportedly being taken from his home around 6 a.m.
His family and members of the community have cried foul and are calling for answers.
Lawyers David Comissiong and Andrew Pilgrim called for an independent investigation into the death of the father of three. They have suggested that two senior officers be brought from neighbouring islands to be in charge of the police investigation in order “to avoid the unhealthy situation of having the Barbados police investigate themselves”.
