PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – Barbados have fallen four places and are now ranked 165th in football in the latest rankings released yesterday by the sport’s world governing body FIFA.
Barbados had a torrid campaign of failure in this year’s second round of the World Cup qualifiers and are now 17th out of 25 teams in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU).
The Tridents lost both matches 2-0 to Guyana and fell 2-1 to Bermuda in both legs. After a 2-0 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados were hammered 4-0 on the return leg.
Reigning Caribbean champions Jamaica finished the year at the top of the rankings.
The Reggae Boyz maintained their hold on the No.1 spot, despite a seven-place drop that leaves them 54th in the World Rankings.
Surprisingly, Trinidad and Tobago advanced ten places in the world rankings to 76th, making them the second-best side in the CFU, the biggest move in the CFU, and occurred despite the Soca Warriors failing to advance to the next stage of World Cup qualifying, after a string of feeble results, and having little or no playing time in the last month.
Reigning World and European champions Spain remain unchallenged at the top of the table, followed by Netherlands, Germany and Uruguay, who are all still competing in an exciting head-to-head battle for second place. (CMC)
